What We Do

Our History

The CPR Engineer's House is a fully restored 1911 house built by the Canadian Pacific Railway as staff housing for their chief engineer of the newly announced Irrigation development. The 1756 square foot home is situated on its original site in the heart of Brooks, the first and most opulent of a row of CPR staff housing. Located in Evergreen Park, where the street was once known as ‘rotten row’ because of the privileged lifestyle the CPR staff enjoyed....34 gardeners to tend the properties, free passage to Calgary aboard the train with a staff car to pick up and drop off, a monthly pay cheque ....none of which new settlers enjoyed.

Now an Alberta Designated Heritage site, the property includes a heated patio space in the conservatory to the east of the house that gives room for themed public programming, private events, workshops and School programs are available to be booked on Tuesday, Wednesday or  Thursdays. Programs must be booked in advance.

Our mandate is to preserve and present local history in an entertaining and thought provoking way. It is our goal ‘to create a positive image of Brooks and area’ starting in the hearts and minds of the people who call Brooks home.

If the walls could speak, the House would surely have many stories to tell of men and women who gathered to socialize as friends, plan as leaders and ruminate about the future of the small town of Brooks and the future of the Province of Alberta.

We are pleased that the CPR Engineer's House stands as a testament to early leaders, vision and to the western ethics of hard work and entrepreneurial spirit that we know as the foundation of the county we have today. We look forward to receiving you soon!
